It all began with a phone call — a mother’s voice filled with worry, hope, and exhaustion. On the other end of the line was the Director of Well Way Rehab Solutions, listening intently as she described her son JP’s struggles after a concussion that had turned their world upside down. Once a vibrant, active young man, he was now battling shoulder surgery, constant fatigue, dizziness, memory lapses, and an overwhelming mental fog that made even the simplest tasks feel impossible.
The mother spoke of her son’s frustration — how his personality seemed dimmed, how his confidence had eroded, and how their family felt lost in a maze of uncertainty. That one compassionate conversation marked the beginning of a new chapter. Theteam atWell Way Rehab didn’t just hear symptoms;they heard a story of resilience waiting to be rewritten.
Read their story as they experienced it in this heart-warming interview.
Client JP interview
What was life like for you before starting therapy at Well Way Rehab Solutions?
I have what many would consider a ‘dream job’. My brother and I run a company called Abstract Aerial Art. We travel around the world photographing and filming content which is licensed by businesses, media and individuals for commercial use through a contract we have with Getty Images. Alongside that, we also sell prints of our work.

Filming everything from wildfires and wildlife in some of the remotest places on Earth, to volcanos and idyllic beaches in paradise, our lives are not what you would call ‘normal’!
On 1st November 2024 during a shoot in Bali, I was crashed into on my motorcycle and sustained a severe head injury, a damaged vestibular system and multiple broken bones. Following two months of Indonesian hospitals, I was flown back to the UK to begin daily neurological rehab and physio with Well Way Rehabilitation Solutions.
Can you describe a moment in your rehabilitation where you realised you were making real progress?
When Karl had to go into to hospital to have an operation on his hip, my mum took over the daily rehab duties and things got SO much better 🙂 – the fact I can even say that knowing Karl would appreciate the joke shows the camaraderie that we’ve built up during my rehabilitation!
All jokes aside, the week I remembered how to tell the time was a real turning point. It took me about one month of trying but when it came back, it really proved to me that the help I was receiving was working and that Karl and his team were the right people to give me the tools to fix the many issues I had. I’ve never looked back from that point.
What specific goals did the therapy team help you achieve that you’re most proud of?
The goal has always been to get back to my ‘normal’ life. Karl and Pete have helped me achieve everything up to the point I’m currently at in my rehabilitation.
Each session, they taught me to think about how far I’d come rather than focus on how far there was to go. That might sound simple but when you are the one living with the injuries, every minute of every day, it’s difficult to think about things like that.
There’s obviously a lot more to it than just that, but I cannot explain how much that piece of advice changed my mind set and helped move things forward at the speed it has.
How did the therapists at Well Way Rehab Solutions motivate and encourage you during your sessions?
It goes without saying that both Karl and Pete are true professionals. They know their profession inside out but the biggest compliment I can give them both is how quickly they worked out WHAT type of help I would respond to best. Some people require reassurance to get better, others want to be challenged to get better, I am defiantly the latter.
Having the added ability to specifically work out how an individual is going to respond is a rare quality. Both Karl and Pete excel at that.
What skills or abilities have you regained that have made the biggest difference in your daily life?
In the last 3 months, I have gradually returned to the computer-based work that comes with the job I do. For example… uploading, keywording and describing all of the content I had shot before the accident to the Getty website where clients license my work, fulfilling print orders, answering interview question for articles written about our business, running our Instagram channel, responding to emails etc etc.

JP at work
In addition to that, at the end of September 2025, I travelled from my base in Wolverhampton to Newcastle upon Tyne to complete a filming a brief for Getty. Whilst a weekend shoot in the north of England is a very long way from my travel schedule before this happened, it’s a really encouraging step in the right direction. Two months ago, there’s no way I would’ve been able to do it.
If you had to describe the therapy team in three words, what would they be?
ABSOLUTELY F***ING INCREDIBLE! – (if that’s inappropriate… Skilled, Professional, Compassionate)
What would you say to someone else who might be nervous about starting rehabilitation?
Accept the help as soon as you can. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with admitting you need help. To be honest, I didn’t even know how bad things were with my head injury or my vestibular system until Karl and Pete started working with me. That says a lot about how important getting help is. At the end of the day, all I want is to get back to my life as it was before this happened, why waste a minute delaying that, get the help.
I promise you, the sooner you start rehabilitation, the quicker you are on the road to recovery, and the team are making that happen.
Would you recommend Well Way Rehabilitation Solutions as a rehab provider?
Without hesitation. In fact, since the accident, I have already mentioned Well Way Rehabilitation Solutions to a couple of my friends who have been looking for help.
The fact of the matter is, I would not be as far along in my recovery without Karl, Pete, my mum and my family. My continued determination to fully recover is as much for them as it is for myself.
I am eternally grateful for what they have all done to help me on my quest to return to my not so ’normal’ life!
Clients mother Belinda’s interview
From your perspective, what changes did you see in your son throughout his rehabilitation journey?
We were shocked after your initial assessment when you told us how bad he was, but so relieved once you organised a treatment plan, and Very quickly after he began rehab with you we could see improvements – his confidence began to return, and he looked forward to his sessions with you as it gave him hope that he was getting slowly better. He has always had a positive mental attitude, but this is probably the most challenging thing ever to happen to him. Thanks to the help you both gave him he managed to maintain this and is still maintaining it now.
How did the therapy team support not only your son, but also your family during the process?
Both Karl and Pete involved Phil and I in JPs rehab. The ‘debrief’ at the end of each session was invaluable. Everything was explained in great detail, and it really helped us understand the process of his recovery. As a former OT Karl trusted me (I think!!) to continue the neuro rehab on the days between his visits, and gave me guidance as to the best way to help JP. Pete always made sure we knew what physical and vestibular exercises he wanted JP to continue with, and when he discovered both JP and his brother played a fair bit of cricket when they were younger, gave him some ideas of things he could do with Mike to make it more enjoyable and less like rehab.

Can you share a moment that stood out to you as a turning point in his progress?
Living with someone with a TBI it is very hard to see the progress as it is so gradual, so I don’t think there is a single moment that stands out, but When JP started to be more aware of his old world and began working again, we realised he had turned a corner. He and his brother supply photos and videos to Getty images which involves a process called key wording. He would get me to check his work before sending it, but he rarely made mistakes. It was more when friends came to visit and would talk to him we could see a massive change.
What impressed you most about the therapists at Well Way Rehab Solutions?
How quickly they sussed out JP as a character and how to get the best out of him, and us as a family, and how to deal with us too including Coco the cocker spaniel!
Their positivity and optimism were so impressive. The cup half full mentality really helped me. After a visit, Karl often messaged to say how well JP was doing and congratulating us all on our efforts – you have no idea how much that was appreciated!
How has his progress impacted your family’s daily life and future outlook?
The memory training he was given to do by Karl has had a massive impact on me! He asked us to memorise shopping lists which initially I wrote down so I didn’t get them wrong, now, with added distractions out on a walk we can both recall 40 random items! It’s not only JP that has benefitted from his help!
Fortunately I am at home and have the time to dedicate to aiding his recovery with supervising his rehab, but it did take over our lives (mine too). But when you can recognise the impact it is having, and see how JP has responded, it has been totally worth all the hours.
We know JP still has a way to go, but we will continue helping in any way we can. We know we are lucky he survived this accident.
If another parent asked about Well Way Rehab Solutions, what would you tell them?
Do not hesitate in using them! Karl and Pete gave us our son back, and although he still has massive vestibular problems, he continues to work hard to get back to as close to normal as he possible can whilst managing his expectations realistically.
Looking back, what are you most grateful for in this journey with the rehab team?
Finding them in the first place! Everyone kept telling us JP needed neuro rehab, but not where to find it. When I phoned and spoke to Karl, I have never been more relived in my life. I think I actually cried! With one phone conversation he gave me hope that here was the help we needed for JP. When I mentioned the problems with motion sickness there was an immediate solution – Karl and Pete would come here 30 miles away to give him the best chance at recovery, and they have done exactly that.
They have solutions to everything and nothing is insurmountable. We will never be able to thank them enough.
Therapist’s Reflection: JP’s Journey of Strength and Support
As JP’s rehabilitation team, we — Karl, his Occupational Therapist, and Pete, his Physiotherapist — have had the privilege of witnessing one of the most inspiring recoveries we’ve ever been a part of. When JP first came to Well Way Rehab Solutions, he was struggling with the lasting effects of shoulder surgery and a concussion that had disrupted nearly every part of his daily life. His concentration was fleeting, his energy unpredictable, and his confidence shaken, and all of this on top of his pain. Yet, from the very beginning, there was something remarkable about JP — a quiet determination, and an unwavering support system behind him.
JP was lucky to have his mother and family standing firmly by his side. Their love, encouragement, and belief in his potential became the steady foundation upon which his recovery was built. Every milestone, from his first session to the day he confidently stepped back into the routines he loved, was a shared victory — a reflection of teamwork, persistence, and care.
JP shared a photograph he had taken — an image that struck Karl deeply. On the left, flames burn fiercely, wild and consuming. On the right, the scene opens into a calm, open field — clear, balanced, and full of quiet promise. To Karl, this picture perfectly mirrors JP’s journey. When he first began rehab, his brain was like that fire — overworked, chaotic, and overwhelmed. Through dedication, therapy, and support, he slowly transitioned into that open field — a place of calm focus, control, and renewed clarity.

What’s truly moving is that JP took this photograph long before he could have known what it would come to represent. It stands now as a powerful symbol — a visual reflection of his path from confusion to clarity, from struggle to strength.
For us, it’s more than just a success story — it’s a reminder of why we do what we do.
